Firefox Multiple Bookmark Toolbars

I have finally I found a way to have my bookmarks toolbar in Firefox on 2 rows. I started to have too many links (mainly RSS feeds) in the the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder to be shown on a single row and I started to miss sites/blogs that I was checking regularly. So, there are basically two ways of doing this.

1. You can edit the userChrome.css file of your Firefox profile and add a simple code snippet which will enable the multi-row bookmarks toolbar. It didn't work for me since the toolbar continued to reset to a single line, couldn't find why. Here's a link exaplining how to edit the userChrome.css file and here are the 2 lines of code:

#bookmarks-ptf {display:block}

#bookmarks-ptf toolbarseparator {display:inline}

2. Install the "Multi Bookmarks Toolbars" extension for Firefox. Here's the link. After which do the following (taken from the original instruction with a litte extra):
  • Right click on a toolbar and select "Customize"
  • Click the "Add New Toolbar" button which will add a new toolbar to Firefox right above the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • From the "Customize" window drag-and-drop the "Second Bookmarks Toolbar" item on the new toolbar
  • Close the "Customize" window and open the "Bookmarks - Manage Bookmarks..." window
  • Create a new folder and put inside the supplementary bookmarks (in my case I moved the exceeding bookmars I had in the "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" into the newly created folder)
  • Select the new folder
  • Choose the "Set as second bookmars toolbar" option from the "Edit" menu

What is Your Dangerous Idea?

The Edge Foundation, whose goal "is to promote inquiry into and discussion of intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and literary issues, as well as to work for the intellectual and social achievement of society", has published the answers to "The Edge Annual Question - 2006", "What is Your Dangerous Idea" answered by 117 thinkers in the Edge community. There's a whole lot to read, but it sounds quite interesting:)

Playing OGM files on Windows

If you want to play OGM files on your Windows box, don't bother trying to make Windows Media Player work with Ogg Direct Show Filters, which is the first reference when you google for "windows media player OGM".
The fastest and simplest way to get OGM files working is to install the free VLC media player (and streaming server).

Bits of programmers' culture and some army stuff

In every programming book or paper in English, "foo", "bar" and "foobar" appear at least once (per page:)) and I finally found a written definition of these terms : "programmers tend to use the term 'foo' (pronounced 'FOO') as a universal substitute for something real when discussing ideas or presenting examples". The equivalent in French is toto,titi, tata, tutu. Foo and bar originated from the slang military acronym FUBAR which stands for "fucked up beyond all repair/recognition". Wikipedia gives an entire list of slang army acronyms similar to FUBAR :

SAPFU - Surpasses All Previous Fuck Ups
SNAFU - Situation Normal: All Fucked Up
SUSFU - Situation Unchanged, Still Fucked Up
FUMTU - Fucked Up More Than Usual
FUBB - Fucked Up Beyond Belief
TARFU - Things Are Really Fucked Up
TOFU - Things Ordinary: Fucked Up
GFU - General Fuck Up
SAMFU - Self Adjusting Military Fuck Up
TUIFU - The Ultimate In Fuck Ups
FUGAZI - Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In; Refers to out-of-control situation such as a chaotic jungle warfare combat environment
JANFU - Joint Army/Navy Fuck-Up; apparently used by British troops in WWII
JAAFU - Joint Army-Air Force Fuck-Up; the use of JANFU combined with a radical increase in joint-forces operations since 1989, has led to the rare but increasing use of JAAFU
DILLIGAF/DILLIGAS - Do I Look Like I Give A Fuck/Shit? Interrogative form of, "(It) don't mean nothing." Both often heard in Vietnam.
TINS - This Is No Shit! Often seen in veterans' forums
- I Hate This Fucking Place. Generally used at American Service Academies.
